Billbergia pyramidalis ‘Kyoto’
Common Name: Variegated Torch Bromeliad
Billbergia pyramidalis ‘Kyoto’ is a spectacular variegated form of the classic Torch Bromeliad, known for its striking green-and-cream striped leaves and bold, upright growth habit. This cultivar adds an exotic flair to any collection with its fountain-like rosette of arching foliage that glows in bright light.
In summer, it produces a brilliant red-pink flower spike that emerges like a flaming torch from the center of the plant—short-lived but incredibly eye-catching. ‘Kyoto’ is prized by collectors for its ornamental leaves just as much as its blooms, and it’s equally stunning in pots, beds, or hanging planters.
☀ Light Requirements
Prefers bright, filtered light or morning sun. Too much direct sun can burn the variegated foliage, while too little may reduce contrast. Ideal for patios, porches, and bright indoor spaces.
💧 Watering Needs
Water regularly, keeping the central cup (tank) filled with water during the growing season. Flush periodically to avoid stagnation. Keep the soil lightly moist, but never soggy. Reduce watering in winter.
🌡 Temperature Tolerance
Hardy to about 30–32°F for short periods. Best grown in zones 9–11, or as a container plant that can be brought indoors during cold weather. Add a [Heat Pack] for winter shipping.
✨ Special Features
• Vibrant Variegation – Creamy stripes on lush green leaves
• Torch-Like Bloom – Bright flower spike rises dramatically from the rosette
• Tropical Accent Plant – Great for landscapes, planters, and interiors
