Echinocactus grusonii
Common Name: Golden Barrel Cactus
Echinocactus grusonii, commonly known as the Golden Barrel Cactus, is one of the most recognizable and iconic cacti in the world. With its perfectly rounded form, pronounced vertical ribs, and glowing golden-yellow spines, this slow-growing beauty adds architectural structure and desert elegance to any collection or landscape.
Native to central Mexico, this species thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Over time, it forms a large, domed specimen that can live for decades. Mature plants may produce bright yellow flowers from the crown during the summer months, adding even more charm to this already striking cactus.
☀ Light Requirements
Loves full sun. Outdoors, give it as much sunlight as possible. Indoors, place near a south- or west-facing window to maintain its tight, round form and vibrant spines.
💧 Watering Needs
Water deeply only when the soil is fully dry. During spring and summer, it may need more frequent watering, but always ensure excellent drainage. Reduce watering significantly in winter.
🌡 Temperature Tolerance
Hardy to about 20–25°F in dry conditions. Protect from frost and prolonged cold if the soil is wet. Add a [Heat Pack] for winter shipping in cold regions.
✨ Special Features
• Classic Barrel Shape – Bold, symmetrical form perfect for focal points
• Golden Spines – Bright spination that glows in strong light
• Long-Lived – Slow-growing but lives for decades with proper care
