Echinofossulocactus multicostatus
Common Name: Brain Plant
Echinofossulocactus multicostatus, often referred to as the Brain Plant, is a truly eye-catching cactus known for its intricately twisted ribs that resemble the folds of a brain. Native to the arid regions of central Mexico, this small globular species is a favorite among collectors for its dense ribbing, unique geometry, and compact form.
Its skin ranges from grayish-green to bluish-green, and its short spines are fine and slightly curved, adding to its sculptural appeal. In late spring or early summer, mature plants may produce pale pink to lavender flowers from the crown, offering a delicate contrast to its bold structure.
☀ Light Requirements
Prefers bright, indirect sunlight or filtered light. Outdoors, provide partial shade in hotter climates to prevent scorching. Indoors, a bright windowsill or grow light is ideal.
💧 Watering Needs
Water only when the soil is completely dry. This species is very drought-tolerant and sensitive to overwatering. During winter dormancy, reduce watering to a bare minimum.
🌡 Temperature Tolerance
Hardy to around 25–30°F in dry conditions. Protect from frost and excess cold. For cold-weather shipping, consider adding a [Heat Pack].
