Haworthia truncata
Common Name: Horse’s Teeth
Haworthia truncata is one of the most iconic and instantly recognizable species in the Haworthia genus. Known affectionately as Horse’s Teeth, this plant forms a neat row of thick, rectangular leaves that emerge from the soil like a line of green stone slabs. The flattened leaf tips feature translucent “windows” that allow sunlight to penetrate deep into the plant, helping it photosynthesize in its native semi-buried habitat.
Native to the Little Karoo region of South Africa, H. truncata thrives in dry, well-draining conditions and is slow-growing but incredibly rewarding. Its symmetry and sculptural quality make it a favorite among collectors and display growers alike.
☀ Light Requirements
Prefers bright, indirect light or filtered sunlight. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaf tips or cause fading. Great for bright windowsills or shaded outdoor setups.
💧 Watering Needs
Water only when the soil is completely dry. Truncata is highly drought-tolerant and prefers to stay dry during cooler months. Avoid water pooling in the leaf crevices.
🌡 Temperature Tolerance
Hardy to around 30–35°F in dry conditions. Protect from frost. Add a [Heat Pack] for winter orders in colder climates.
✨ Special Features
• Unique Leaf Structure – Square-tipped leaves grow in precise, fan-like rows
• Translucent Windows – Leaf tops allow light in while minimizing water loss
• Collector Favorite – Highly sought-after for its sculptural, alien-like appearance
