Opuntia microdasys var. albispina
Common Name: White Bunny Ears
Opuntia microdasys var. albispina, affectionately known as the White Bunny Ears Cactus, is a beloved and whimsical variety of prickly pear cactus known for its flattened, pad-like stems and evenly spaced clusters of fuzzy white glochids that resemble soft bunny fur. Native to northern Mexico, this cultivar lacks large spines, making it more approachable than other Opuntias—but don’t be fooled: the glochids can still irritate skin if touched!
This charming cactus grows in a clumping, upright form, producing pads that stack and branch like cartoon rabbit ears. In summer, it may produce golden yellow blooms, followed by small fruit in ideal conditions.
☀ Light Requirements
Thrives in bright, direct sun. Outdoors, full sun is ideal. Indoors, place in the sunniest window or under a grow light to maintain compact form and color.
💧 Watering Needs
Water deeply only when soil is completely dry. Increase watering slightly during active growth in warmer months. Cut back significantly in winter to avoid rot.
🌡 Temperature Tolerance
Hardy to about 25°F if kept dry. For colder zones or winter shipping, include a [Heat Pack] to protect from frost.
✨ Special Features
• Iconic Bunny Ear Shape – Playful growth habit with stacked pads
