Agave tequiliana
Common Name: Blue Tequila Agave
Description:
The Agave tequiliana, commonly known as the Blue Tequila Agave, is a striking succulent recognized for its elegant, symmetrical rosettes of blue-gray leaves. Native to the arid and semi-arid regions of Mexico, this agave is famously cultivated for the production of tequila, making it not only an attractive landscaping plant but also a historically significant species.
Reaching up to 5 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide, this agave is a bold and architectural centerpiece for any desert or drought-tolerant garden. Its rigid, sharply pointed leaves add drama, while its low-maintenance care requirements make it an excellent choice for xeriscaping.
Light Requirements:
Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Ensure it receives plenty of bright, direct sunlight for optimal growth.
Watering Needs:
Water sparingly and allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Once established, Agave tequiliana is highly drought-tolerant and thrives on minimal water. Avoid watering during winter dormancy.
Temperature Tolerance:
Hardy down to 20-25°F. Protect from prolonged frost by covering or bringing potted plants indoors during colder months. If Temperatures are going to be lower than this in your area, we highly recommend adding a Heat Pack to your order.
Special Features:
- Tequila Production: The core of this plant (piña) is traditionally used to produce tequila.
- Drought-Tolerant: Thrives in arid climates and requires minimal watering once established.
- Eye-Catching Foliage: The blue-gray leaves create a bold statement in any landscape.
Care Tip:
Handle with care, as the leaves have sharp tips and edges. Use gloves when planting or pruning to avoid injury.
This cactus will ship bare root and will be ready to place directly in a well draining soil mix like our Custom Cactus Mix.
