Alluaudia humbertii
Common Name: Spiny Madagascar Shrub
Alluaudia humbertii is a rare and highly sought-after succulent shrub native to southern Madagascar. Similar in structure to its better-known cousin Alluaudia procera, this species stands out for its densely spined, zig-zagging stems and more compact, shrubby growth habit. The stems are lined with small, rounded green leaves that emerge between pairs of thick, protective spines.
Its unique form and spiny silhouette make it a striking addition to any collection of Madagascar natives, caudiciform plants, or unusual xerophytes. With age, it can develop a beautiful, branched structure ideal for container growing or dry garden focal points.
☀ Light Requirements
Thrives in full sun to very bright light. Outdoors, plant in a sunny, well-drained location. Indoors, it requires strong sunlight—preferably a south-facing window or supplemental grow lights.
💧 Watering Needs
Water deeply only when the soil is completely dry. This species is very drought-tolerant and should be watered sparingly, especially during winter dormancy when it may shed its leaves.
🌡 Temperature Tolerance
Best kept above 50°F. Not frost-hardy—protect from cold, wet conditions. Add a [Heat Pack] when ordering during colder months.
✨ Special Features
