Bursera fagaroides
Common Name: Elephant Tree
Bursera fagaroides is a beautiful caudiciform shrub native to Mexico, prized for its sculptural trunk, papery bark, and bonsai-like appeal. Often referred to as the Elephant Tree, this plant develops a thickened, swollen base (caudex) and smooth, peeling bark in shades of copper, gray, and cream—giving it a weathered, ancient look even when young.
In its active growing season, B. fagaroides pushes out clusters of fine, pinnate leaves and small, fragrant flowers. It’s a favorite among bonsai growers, succulent collectors, and caudex lovers alike for its artistic form and drought-hardy nature.
☀ Light Requirements
Thrives in full sun to bright, indirect light. Outdoors, full sun enhances trunk character. Indoors, place in the brightest spot available—preferably a south-facing window.
💧 Watering Needs
Water moderately during the growing season (spring to early fall), allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. In winter, the plant may go dormant and drop leaves—during this time, reduce watering drastically.
🌡 Temperature Tolerance
Not frost-tolerant. Protect from temperatures below 40°F. Ideal for warm, dry climates or as a container specimen that can be moved indoors for winter. Add a Heat Pack for cold-weather shipping.
