Cereus - Jamacaru

Description

Cereus jamacaru, also known as the Mandacaru Cactus, is a towering and iconic cactus native to Brazil. Known for its striking vertical growth and ability to thrive in arid climates, this cactus is a statement piece for any garden or landscape. Its tall, ribbed stems are complemented by spines and occasional large, fragrant white flowers, which bloom at night and attract pollinators like moths and bats. This hardy species is as beautiful as it is resilient, making it a favorite among collectors and landscape designers.

Growth Habit

  • Size: Can grow up to 30 feet tall in its natural habitat but typically remains smaller in cultivation.
  • Structure: Upright, columnar growth with ribbed stems that branch occasionally.

Light Requirements

  • Preferred Light: Full sun is ideal for optimal growth and health.
  • Indoor Care: Place in the brightest spot possible, such as a south-facing window.

Watering

  • Water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry. Reduce watering significantly in cooler months.
  • Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the potting mix drains well.

Temperature Tolerance

  • Hardy to temperatures as low as 25°F (-4°C) with some frost protection.
  • If temperatures are going to be lower than this in your area, we highly recommend adding a [ ] to your order.

Soil Requirements

  • Requires a well-draining cactus and succulent mix. Adding pumice or coarse sand can improve aeration and drainage.

Care Tips

  • Handle with care due to its sharp spines. Gloves are recommended when pruning or repotting.
  • Fertilize during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted cactus fertilizer for best results.

Common Names

  • Mandacaru Cactus
  • Cardeiro

This cactus will ship bare root and will be ready to place directly in a well draining soil mix like our Custom Cactus Mix.
