Euphorbia poissonii
Common Name: Poison Euphorbia
Euphorbia poissonii is a rare and striking species native to northern Nigeria, known for its upright, shrubby growth and bold, cactus-like appearance. Despite its beauty, this plant is also infamous—its milky sap is highly toxic and was traditionally used as an arrow poison, giving the species its name.
The thick, succulent stems are pale green with prominent ridges and short spines, and under the right stress conditions, the plant may take on bronzy or reddish tones. It’s a favorite among Euphorbia collectors for its rarity, historical use, and architectural form.
☀ Light Requirements
Thrives in full sun to bright, indirect light. Outdoors, give it strong light with some afternoon protection in hot climates. Indoors, place near a bright window or under grow lights.
💧 Watering Needs
Water sparingly and only when the soil is fully dry. Euphorbia poissonii is highly drought-tolerant and must be planted in fast-draining soil. Reduce watering in cooler months.
🌡 Temperature Tolerance
Hardy to about 35–40°F. Protect from frost and extended cold. For winter orders or cold climates, we recommend adding a [Heat Pack].
⚠ Safety Note
The latex sap of E. poissonii is extremely caustic and toxic. Handle with care. Avoid contact with skin or eyes, and always keep out of reach of children and pets.
