Euphorbia (Monadenium) spectabilis
Common Name: Spectabilis Spurge
Euphorbia spectabilis, formerly classified under Monadenium, is a rare and eye-catching succulent species known for its thick, tuberous caudex and arching stems lined with glossy, green leaves. Native to East Africa, this plant is both bizarre and beautiful, prized for its unusual form and seasonal pink-to-reddish cyathia that appear at the stem tips.
This caudiciform euphorbia stores water in its swollen base, making it well adapted to dry spells. Over time, it can develop a low shrub-like habit, with multiple trailing stems that contrast strikingly with the swollen trunk below.
☀ Light Requirements
Thrives in bright, indirect light or dappled sun. Can tolerate some direct sun, especially in the morning, but too much heat may scorch the leaves.
💧 Watering Needs
Water when soil is completely dry, then water deeply. Reduce watering during dormancy (typically in winter). As a caudiciform, it is drought-tolerant and does best when slightly under-watered rather than overwatered.
🌡 Temperature Tolerance
Protect from temperatures below 40°F. Not frost-hardy. Add a [Heat Pack] for winter shipments or if temps are expected to drop in transit.
⚠ CAUTION:
Produces toxic white sap that can irritate skin and eyes. Handle with care, and keep away from pets and small children.
