Ferocactus gracilis
Common Name: Fire Barrel Cactus
Ferocactus gracilis, commonly known as the Fire Barrel Cactus, is a bold and dramatic species native to Baja California. This striking cactus features a cylindrical to barrel-shaped body lined with sharply defined ribs and long, flat spines that flare outward like flames. The spines vary in color from deep crimson to bright orange-red, giving the plant a fiery appearance—especially when backlit by sunlight.
Unlike more compact Ferocactus species, F. gracilis can grow quite tall over time and occasionally branches, making it an impressive focal point for desert landscapes or large containers. Mature specimens produce bright yellow to reddish flowers from the crown in summer.
☀ Light Requirements
Loves full sun. Outdoors, place in the brightest location possible for best spine color and growth. Indoors, ensure strong direct light to prevent stretching.
💧 Watering Needs
Water deeply only when the soil is completely dry. During the growing season, water more frequently but always allow for proper drainage. Reduce watering in winter.
🌡 Temperature Tolerance
Hardy to about 25–30°F in dry conditions. Protect from extended frost or wet cold. For winter orders or colder zones, consider adding a [Heat Pack].
