Ferocactus latispinus
Common Name: Devil’s Tongue Barrel
Ferocactus latispinus, also known as the Devil’s Tongue Barrel, is a compact and fiercely beautiful cactus known for its dramatic, flattened central spines that curve outward like a serpent’s tongue. These wide, ribbon-like spines range in color from deep red to purplish-pink and sit atop a squat, heavily ribbed body that stays low and round for many years.
Native to central and southern Mexico, this species produces show-stopping, funnel-shaped flowers in late fall to early winter—typically a rich lavender or purple color. It’s a favorite among collectors for its bold texture, unusual spine structure, and bloom timing when few others are flowering.
☀ Light Requirements
Thrives in full sun to bright, indirect light. Outdoors, give it a sunny spot with good airflow. Indoors, place near a south- or west-facing window for best spine color and compact growth.
💧 Watering Needs
Water deeply only when the soil is completely dry. This cactus is drought-tolerant and prone to rot if overwatered. Cut back on watering during winter dormancy.
🌡 Temperature Tolerance
Hardy down to about 25–30°F in dry conditions. Protect from frost, especially when the soil is moist. For winter orders or cold zones, add a [Heat Pack].
