Fouquieria purpusii

Common Name: Purpus’ Ocotillo

Description:
The Fouquieria purpusii is a unique, drought-tolerant succulent shrub native to arid regions of Mexico. Known for its spiny, branching stems and striking silhouette, this plant adds an architectural flair to any landscape or collection. Its vibrant green stems contrast beautifully with its sharp spines, and during its blooming season, it produces clusters of tubular red or orange flowers that attract pollinators like hummingbirds.

Growing up to 10 feet tall in ideal conditions, Fouquieria purpusii thrives in hot, dry climates and is perfect for xeriscaping or as a focal point in desert-themed gardens.

Light Requirements:

Prefers full sun and thrives in bright, direct sunlight. Provide at least 6 hours of sun daily for optimal growth and flowering.

Watering Needs:

Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. This plant is highly drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering once established. Avoid overwatering, especially in cooler months.

Temperature Tolerance:

Hardy down to 25°F with proper acclimation. Protect from prolonged frost or freezing by covering or moving indoors. If temperatures are going to be lower than this in your area, we highly recommend adding a Heat Pack to your order.

Special Features:

  • Drought-Tolerant: Thrives in arid conditions with minimal care.
  • Eye-Catching Blooms: Produces vibrant flowers that attract pollinators.
  • Unique Growth Habit: A dramatic addition to xeriscaping and desert gardens.

Care Tip:

When planting outdoors, ensure the soil has excellent drainage to prevent root rot.

This cactus will ship bare root and will be ready to place directly in a well draining soil mix like our Custom Cactus Mix.

Of course, if you receive a plant that you are dissatisfied with please reach out to us. We want to make it right!

If temperatures where you live will be much lower than 20℉ even heat packs may not work. You may consider waiting until things warm up a bit. We know you love your plants just like we do and we wouldn't want any of them to freeze.
