Gasteria batesiana
Common Name: Bates’ Gasteria

Gasteria batesiana is a distinctive and highly textured South African succulent, prized for its dark green, speckled leaves and slow, offsetting growth habit. This species is named after botanist G.W. Bates and is especially popular for its ability to thrive in low light and for its richly colored, bumpy leaves that give it a unique, prehistoric look.

The leaves grow in a distichous (opposite) arrangement when young, eventually forming a loose rosette over time. Small clusters form at the base as the plant matures, making it an excellent candidate for indoor displays or shaded outdoor containers.

☀ Light Requirements
Prefers bright, indirect light or partial shade. Excellent for north-facing windows or protected patios. Too much direct sun may cause leaf stress or fading.

💧 Watering Needs
Water deeply when the soil is fully dry. Gasterias are very drought-tolerant and sensitive to overwatering, especially in low-light conditions. Cut back on water during winter dormancy.

🌡 Temperature Tolerance
Keep above 40°F for best results. Protect from frost. For winter shipping or cold regions, we recommend adding a [Heat Pack].

✨ Special Features
Heavily Textured Leaves – Mottled and bumpy for extra visual interest
Shade-Tolerant – Great for indoor growers and low-light spots
Slow Clumper – Forms attractive colonies over time

Other Common Names:
Bates’ Gasteria, Ox Tongue (general for Gasteria species)
