Grafted Gymnocalycium mihanovichii var. friedrichii
Common Name: Color Balls
The Grafted Gymnocalycium mihanovichii var. friedrichii, affectionately known as Color Balls, is a vibrant and playful cactus that turns heads in any collection. Lacking chlorophyll, this mutant variety boasts brilliant neon colors—ranging from hot pinks and fiery oranges to deep reds and even yellows—made possible through grafting onto a green, photosynthetic rootstock (typically Hylocereus).
These eye-catching “cactus lollipops” are small, spherical, and heavily ribbed with dainty spines. While they may not grow large, their bright color and compact size make them ideal for windowsills, desks, or as quirky gifts. They're low-maintenance and beginner-friendly.
☀ Light Requirements
Prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can fade colors or cause burns, especially on lighter tones. Indoors, place near an east or north window for best color retention.
💧 Watering Needs
Water when the soil has completely dried out. Use well-draining cactus mix and avoid overwatering, particularly since the grafted rootstock is more moisture-sensitive.
🌡 Temperature Tolerance
Keep above 50°F. These grafted plants are not frost-tolerant and must be brought indoors during cold weather. For winter shipping, be sure to include a [Heat Pack].
