Mammillaria plumosa
Common Name: Feather Cactus
Mammillaria plumosa, affectionately known as the Feather Cactus, is a soft, cloud-like beauty that surprises most with its gentle touch. Native to northeastern Mexico, this small clustering cactus is entirely covered in delicate, white feathery spines that give it the appearance (and feel!) of a powder puff. Don’t be fooled—underneath the fluff is a true desert survivor.
As it matures, M. plumosa forms tight mounds of rounded heads and, when happy, can produce small, creamy white to pale yellow flowers nestled between its feathery tubercles. It’s a favorite for collectors due to its soft look and unusual texture—perfect for small pots, fairy gardens, or display shelves.
☀ Light Requirements
Prefers bright, indirect sunlight or filtered light. Harsh direct sun can scorch the delicate spines. Indoors, place near a bright window with some gentle morning sun.
💧 Watering Needs
Water only when the soil is completely dry. This cactus is drought-tolerant and sensitive to overwatering—especially because the feathery covering can hold extra moisture. Reduce watering in winter.
🌡 Temperature Tolerance
Hardy to about 25–30°F if kept dry. Protect from frost and wet cold. Add a [Heat Pack] to your order for winter shipping.
