Melocactus bahiensis
Common Name: Bahia Melon Cactus
Melocactus bahiensis is a captivating species native to the state of Bahia, Brazil, where it thrives in rocky, arid landscapes. Known for its perfectly rounded, smooth green body and deeply cut ribs, this species develops a striking red to reddish-brown cephalium at maturity—a woolly, bristled structure from which small pink flowers emerge throughout the growing season.
Unlike most cacti, Melocactus species stop growing taller once the cephalium appears, shifting all their energy into flower and seed production. This marks the plant’s transition into its adult phase, making M. bahiensis a living timeline in a pot—perfect for collectors who love watching their plants evolve.
☀ Light Requirements
Thrives in full sun to bright, indirect light. Outdoors, give it strong sun with good airflow. Indoors, place near a bright window and rotate occasionally. More sun helps encourage healthy cephalium growth.
💧 Watering Needs
Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry. Avoid water pooling in the crown. Reduce watering in winter or during extended cool periods. Always use a very well-draining cactus mix.
🌡 Temperature Tolerance
Sensitive to cold. Best kept above 45°F. Protect from frost, especially if the soil is damp. For winter shipping or colder climates, we recommend adding a [Heat Pack].

If temperatures near you are below 45℉ we highly recommend adding a Heat Pack to your order.
