Melocactus Conoideus (Cone Melon Cactus)
Melocactus Conoideus (Cone Melon Cactus)
Melocactus conoideus
Common Name: Cone Melon Cactus
Description:
The Melocactus conoideus is a captivating and unique species of cactus native to Brazil. Known for its distinctive shape, this cactus features a round, conical body with smooth, deep green skin accentuated by symmetrical ribs and clusters of short, sharp spines. What truly sets it apart is its cephalium—a specialized, woolly structure at the top of mature plants where it produces vibrant pink to red flowers and small, decorative fruits.
The cephalium typically begins to develop after 5-10 years, depending on growing conditions, marking the transition to the plant's mature phase. This rare and fascinating feature makes it a favorite among collectors.
Light Requirements:
Prefers bright, indirect sunlight to full sun. Gradually acclimate to direct sunlight to prevent scorching, especially for young plants.
Watering Needs:
Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During the growing season, water deeply but infrequently. Reduce watering during the winter months when the cactus is dormant.
Temperature Tolerance:
Hardy down to 40°F. Protect from frost or prolonged cold by moving indoors or covering during colder months. If temperatures are going to be lower than this in your area, we highly recommend adding a Heat Pack to your order.
Special Features:
- Cephalium Formation: Produces a woolly, cone-like structure that bears flowers and fruit after reaching maturity.
- Architectural Form: Symmetrical ribs and sharp spines add texture and visual interest.
- Collector’s Plant: A prized addition to any advanced cactus collection.
Other Common Names:
- Turks Cap.
This cactus will ship bare root and will be ready to place directly in a well draining soil mix like our Custom Cactus Mix.
