Melocactus conoideus
Common Name: Cone Melon Cactus

Melocactus conoideus is a rare and endangered species native to the dry rocky landscapes of Bahia, Brazil. True to its name, this plant is known for the cone-shaped cephalium that forms at maturity—tall, narrow, and dramatically woolly, often tinted with reddish-orange bristles. The deep green body is compact and well-ribbed, with small, orderly spines that contrast beautifully with the bold structure of the cephalium.

A slow grower and true collector’s piece, M. conoideus is ideal for those who love unusual forms and the dramatic visual shift that occurs when the cephalium develops.

☀ Light Requirements
Prefers full sun to bright, indirect light. Outdoors, give it plenty of sun with protection from extreme afternoon heat. Indoors, place in a bright, south- or west-facing window to encourage compact growth and cephalium formation.

💧 Watering Needs
Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry. Avoid watering directly into the cephalium. In winter or dormancy, reduce watering significantly. Use a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix.

🌡 Temperature Tolerance
Keep above 45°F. Not frost-tolerant. Protect from cold and wet conditions. For winter shipping or cold climates, consider adding a [Heat Pack].
