Melocactus erythracanthus
Common Name: Red-Spined Melon Cactus
Melocactus erythracanthus is a rare and highly sought-after species native to the arid regions of eastern Cuba. Distinguished by its bright reddish-orange spines, this striking Melocactus features a squat, rounded body with pronounced ribs and a deep green to bluish-green epidermis. As it matures, it produces the signature cephalium—a dense, woolly, bristled crown in hues of rust and crimson from which petite pink flowers emerge.
This species is slow-growing and demanding but incredibly rewarding. Its unique coloration and compact form make it a centerpiece in any advanced collection.
☀ Light Requirements
Prefers full sun to very bright indirect light. Outdoors, give it strong light with good airflow. Indoors, place in your brightest window—sunlight enhances spine coloration and promotes cephalium development.
💧 Watering Needs
Water thoroughly only when the soil is fully dry. Avoid watering the cephalium. In winter or during dormancy, reduce watering drastically. Use a gritty, fast-draining mix to prevent root rot.
🌡 Temperature Tolerance
Very sensitive to cold and excessive moisture. Keep above 50°F at all times. For winter shipping or colder climates, we recommend adding a [Heat Pack].
✨ Special Features
• Red to Copper Spines – Eye-catching spination sets it apart from other Melocactus species
• Woolly Cephalium – Reddish bristled crown develops at maturity and produces soft pink blooms
• Ultra-Rare – One of the most coveted Cuban Melocactus species for advanced growers
