Pilosocereus magnificus
Common Name: Facheiro Azul (Magnificent Blue Torch)
Pilosocereus magnificus, commonly called the Facheiro or Magnificent Blue Torch, is a breathtaking columnar cactus endemic to the rocky hillsides of Minas Gerais, Brazil. This rare species is prized for its intensely blue-gray skin, pronounced ribs, and golden to coppery spines that shimmer in the sunlight. Young specimens begin as compact columns but can eventually grow into tall, sculptural towers with age.
This species thrives in bright, dry conditions and rewards growers with elegant nighttime blooms—creamy-white, funnel-shaped flowers that emerge from near the apex of mature stems.
☀ Light Requirements
Requires full sun to maintain its vibrant blue color and upright growth. Outdoors, place in the brightest spot possible. Indoors, provide strong direct light or high-output grow lights.
💧 Watering Needs
Water deeply but only when the soil is completely dry. Like all Pilosocereus, it is sensitive to overwatering. Use a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix. Water sparingly in winter.
🌡 Temperature Tolerance
Hardy to about 30–35°F in dry conditions. Protect from frost and excess moisture. For cold zones or winter shipping, we recommend adding a [Heat Pack].
✨ Special Features
• Spectacular Blue Skin – One of the bluest cactus species in cultivation
• Golden Spines – Vivid contrast against the glaucous blue body
• Brazilian Native – Rare in cultivation and highly prized by collectors
Other Common Names:
