Stenocereus griseus (Lemaireocereus griseus)

Description

Stenocereus griseus, also known as the Gray Ghost or Mexican Organ Pipe Cactus, is a majestic and fast-growing columnar cactus native to the arid regions of northern South America and Mexico. This elegant species features smooth, bluish-gray stems with pronounced ribs lined by short, golden spines. It thrives in warm climates and is prized for its architectural beauty, whether grown in the landscape or as a statement container plant.

Growth Habit

  • Size: Reaches heights of 20–30 feet in its native habitat; smaller in cultivation.
  • Structure: Clusters of tall, upright stems form dense thickets over time.

Light Requirements

  • Preferred Light: Full sun is essential for optimal growth and spine development.
  • Indoor Care: Requires a bright location, such as a south-facing window or under grow lights.

Watering

  • Water deeply when the soil is completely dry, especially during the active growing season (spring and summer).
  • Reduce watering in the fall and winter when the plant enters dormancy. Overwatering can lead to root rot.

Temperature Tolerance

  • Hardy to temperatures as low as 25°F (-4°C) with protection from prolonged frost.
  • If temperatures are going to be lower than this in your area, we highly recommend adding a Heat Pack to your order.

Soil Requirements

  • Prefers a well-draining cactus and succulent mix. Adding sand, pumice, or perlite improves drainage and prevents water retention.

Care Tips

  • This cactus produces large, nocturnal flowers that are white and fragrant, followed by edible, round fruits.
  • Handle with care due to sharp spines. Gloves are recommended during pruning or repotting.
  • Fertilize during the growing season with a diluted cactus fertilizer for robust growth.

Common Names

  • Gray Ghost
  • Mexican Organ Pipe Cactus
  • Pitayo de Mayo

This cactus will ship bare root and will be ready to place directly in a well draining soil mix like our Custom Cactus Mix.
