Pilosocereus gounellei
Common Name: Xiquexique
Pilosocereus gounellei, also called Xiquexique, is a tough, shrubby columnar cactus native to the dry caatinga scrublands of northeastern Brazil. This unique species forms multiple tall, ribbed stems with a rich green to grayish-green color, decorated with clusters of short, golden to grayish spines and fuzzy, beard-like areoles along the ribs.
Adapted to survive in some of the harshest environments, P. gounellei is a fast grower that forms dense, multi-branched clumps over time. Mature plants can produce beautiful, tubular white or pale yellow flowers, which open at night and are pollinated by bats and moths. This species is highly drought-tolerant and perfect for xeriscaping or collectors looking for something bold and architectural.
☀ Light Requirements
Thrives in full sun. Outdoors, plant in the sunniest, driest spot you have. Indoors, place in a very bright window or supplement with strong grow lighting.
💧 Watering Needs
Water deeply only when the soil has fully dried out. This cactus is extremely drought-adapted and sensitive to overwatering. Cut back in winter or during cooler months.
🌡 Temperature Tolerance
Hardy down to around 25–30°F in dry conditions. Protect from frost if the soil is wet or temperatures are prolonged. For cold zones or winter shipping, add a [Heat Pack].
